ThunderFace 4K Duo Upgrade Options

With the official launch of ThunderFace 4K Duo+, we’re taking a closer look at the upgrade options available to owners of the original ThunderFace 4K Duo model.

New Duo+, More Possibilities

The original Duo remains the ultimate QTAKE output device. Duo+ builds on that foundation by adding video input capabilities, making it a more versatile solution for professional video workflows.

Duo+ supports two operating modes, selectable through firmware configuration:

  • 0/8 mode (output-only): Provides up to eight video outputs (up to 2x 4K or 8x HD out), retaining the functionality of the original Duo.
  • 4/4 mode (input/output): Provides up to four video inputs and four outputs (up to 2x 4K I/O or 4x HD I/O), allowing one device to handle both tasks.

The input/output configuration can consolidate multiple devices into a single, compact setup, whether you’re building a streamlined QTAKE Pro rig or creating a portable monitor-recorder by connecting Duo+ directly to an iPad Pro. Learn more about the iPad Pro setup →

Upgrading Your Existing Duo to Duo+

All ThunderFace 4K Duo units are eligible for an upgrade to Duo+ functionality, but the required procedure depends on the unit’s serial number and production batch. Please contact us with your unit’s serial number so we can check which option applies to your device.

Free software upgrade

Eligible units can gain Duo+ functionality simply by applying the software update in QTAKE Pro 3.0. No board-level intervention or other servicing action is required.

Paid hardware upgrade

Units that require board-level rework must first be serviced before the Duo+ functionality can be enabled through the software update. The board-rework upgrade costs $490 / €430, plus shipping.

Optional Add-On – Enclosure Upgrade

Alongside the Duo+ functionality upgrade, existing Duo owners can also opt for the new slim, lighter aluminum enclosure for an additional $340 / €300, plus shipping. This is a separate upgrade option and can be discussed alongside your Duo+ conversion.

Important Service and Warranty Considerations

Board-level rework on in-warranty devices must be performed by an authorized service provider. Currently, the manufacturer, IN2CORE, is the authorized provider for this work. We’re working to expand the list of authorized service providers to help reduce shipping costs and turnaround times for Duo owners.

Please note that performing board-level work on an in-warranty unit outside the authorized service process will void its warranty.

For out-of-warranty units, we also recommend using an authorized service provider. Improper handling, electrostatic discharge (ESD), or other servicing errors can damage the device. If unauthorized work causes damage, we may be unable to repair the unit, even on a paid basis.

Find the Right Upgrade for Your Duo

To determine the options available for your unit, please contact us with your ThunderFace 4K Duo serial number. We’ll confirm whether your device qualifies for the free software upgrade or requires paid hardware servicing.
